Vampires with a New Attitude
Yup. I wrote one. Maybe more, if you folks like Sergei and crew.
How Blood Red Moon came to be is a long, sometimes gruesome, story about me trying to fit in with the new wave of Urban Fantasy. Basically, my agent said “I can sell anything with a vampire in it.” Well, I hadn’t read much urban fantasy, and of that, only a handful appealed to me…and all of those were written by hard core SF/F writers…but the book he sent me to as an example that was selling “like crazy” wasn’t the Patricia Briggs style of fast-paced UF, but a long, very sloooooow book. I took this to mean that I could write my kind of book in a modern setting with a cool new take on vampires. (Well, I thought it was cool. And to do my dear Sergei credit, my agent thought it was cool, too.) The only problem was, I like taking the time to develop nuance of characters and story, and, examples aside, what my agent was really looking for was fast paced easy-reads with far simpler characters. But big. And complex.
I haven’t figured that one out yet.
I tried editing it to meet his suggestions, but I’d have had to gut the story, and frankly, I really liked it the way it was. So…here I offer my take on a 21st Century vampire.
And his cat.
Blood Red Moon will be out as soon as I get the cover done.
