Ring of Lightning is my first fantasy novel. I like reading fantasy, but I’m really a techie-kinda-gal at heart, so when I began constructing my fantasy milieu, it took on a bit of an SF feel in that you’ve got the sense (because the main characters believe it) that there’s solid cause and effect behind the magic. Over the years, many hard and fast SF readers have expressed surprise in that they really enjoy the story. Fortunately, hard and fast Fantasy readers also seem to like it.
The main characters are four brothers whose lives take very different turns because of the happenstance of birth time and order in a rapidly changing world. Like the ‘NetWalkers series, there’s a very strong psychological component to the story, but there’s action, adventure, romance, politics…all those fun things that happen when people with complex lives come together.
Ring of Lightning begins the story arc. Between arranged marriages, for the purpose of begetting ‘the greatest ringmaster of all time,’ and lightning storms and family feuds, our three brothers are not having a good time. Add a covert operation to destroy Rhomatum’s power-generating rings from Rhomatum’s historical enemy, an attitudinal red-headed shepherdess who just happens to be allergic to sheep, and a ringdancer with an unusual, scaled mother, and the scene is set for excitement and fun.
